An Smid (1996) is an autodidactic queer filmmaker and photographer. With a bachelor's degree in Media Studies and Anthropology (2019) in pocket, they have tackled a wide range of topics in their work - ranging from queer belonging in De Anti Familie (2023) or the fast fashion industry in Mistaken Fabrics (2021). While each project has a different approach in terms of style and format, they all have a distinct experimental visual and narrative approach in common. Their films often critique the system; but they do so with humor, style and the occasional absurdism. The stories they tell are often deeply personal.
In 2023, An started a FLINTA* (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Nonbinary, Trans & Agender) film collective called Het Freaky Film Collectief with some fellow queer filmmakers. The collective believes that filmmaking is an inherently collaborative art form and they want to move away from individualist hierarchical filmmaking practices. They are on a mission to make the Dutch film world more queer and more weird. Their first film De Anti Familie has won the award for Upcoming Talent at the Queer Film Festival in Utrecht in 2023.
